In this session, Johan van Amersfoort will share lessons learned of his 7-year journey to build a homelabs to run AI workloads. His own AI journey started in 2017 when the first VDI by Day, Compute by Night concept was developed. Since then, het build many different apps, platforms and used his lab to know more about AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Models, Neural Networks, and things like computer vision. What worked? I've been working in IT for over 20 years now. The last couple of years my main focus has been End User Computing and loving it! I will always try to find the best solution possible, keep an open and no nonsense mindset and getting things done. The biggest lesson I learned? In the end it is not about technology, it's all about the end user experience. Let's use technology to create the best user experience possible!
IT has always played a major role in my life and since 2004 I have also been able to make it my job. I started as an all-round system engineer and have since come into contact with many technologies and have developed a lot of areas of interest including cloud, security & automation. In the last 5 years I have come to know various products in the VMware area and especially the last year with the end user computing solutions of VMware which have caught my interest and therefore I would like to develop myself further in this area. In the end it all comes down to one thing, a satisfied end user who can perform the work safely and properly anywhere in the world.
Johan van Amersfoort works as Technologist EUC, AI & IoT at ITQ Consultancy. He is the author of the VDI Design Guide, a vExpert since 2015, a VMware End-User Computing Champion since 2016 and the first VMware Certified Design Expert on Desktop and Mobility (VCDX-DTM) in the Benelux. Johan is specialized in VDI, Graphical Acceleration, AI Platforms and Application Delivery and a regular speaker on events like VMUGs, UserCons, and VMworld and one of the founders of VMware EUC TechCon.
It was during my first internship when I first laid my eyes on VMware ESX, and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve always had a huge passion for technology, but my spark was really lit during that internship. In the following years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with all kinds of products and vendors while exploring all aspects of an IT infrastructure. My passion for virtualization always stood out, and it didn’t take me long to decide this would be my area of focus. What appealed to me the most were the possibilities that virtualization offered. You could do things you didn’t think were possible with unseen speed and efficiency.
I have been working in IT from 2009 onwards, starting with Cisco networking. My area of expertise expanded into storage and virtualization. Getting more and more knowledge about virtualization made me realize this is the way forward. Combining my knowledge and passion for technology and understanding the related technical areas of virtualization is one of my strong points. I love learning and expanding my knowledge, there is no limit in the virtual world!
Coming from a storage oriented role, my past focus has been on storage environments. Given the amount of overlap between the worlds of IT, I had an introduction into ESX 3.5 early on and have been a huge fan of virtualization ever since. I enjoy the development and transformation of the world of virtualization and am proud to be a part of it.
