VMworld is one of the highlights of the year. It’s one of the biggest virtualization conferences on the planet and the place to be if VMware technology and its ecosystem are what drive you. This year will be even more awesome because the VDI Design Guide was launched this month and there are a lot of things happening around the book.
I’m feeling very lucky to be able to visit the VMworld conferences in both Las Vegas and Barcelona for the third year in a row. Last year was the first time I presented at both events and even though I don’t have a breakout session in the VMworld US 2018 agenda, you can find me presenting at different stages/areas. The following is an overview of where to find me presenting or talking about the book:
- Monday morning 10:30 @ the VMworld bookstore for a signing session.
- Monday morning 11:30 @ the Liquidware booth for a signing session.
- Tuesday afternoon 13:30 @ the NVIDIA booth where I’ll co-present a session (with Erik Bohnhorst) about sizing and tuning vGPU and connection protocols. After the session, I will be signing books at the booth.
- Tuesday afternoon/evening 17:30 @ Brian Madden’s Techtalk & Beer where I will present a session about multiplayer gaming on VDI
- Wednesday morning 11:00 @ the VMUG theater to present about the book and the VCDX process together with Marco van Baggum.
In case you missed it, Marco van Baggum and I will bring some limited-edition swag and stickers to VMworld. If you see us, we take bribes such as Coronas

EUC Champions Panel: Everything You Were Afraid to Ask About VDI[WIN3530PU]
Join several of VMware’s EUC Champions and Brian Madden in this lively panel discussion about VDI in 2018. We’ll discuss various expert perspectives on topics like “Is 2018 the year of VDI?”, VDI versus RDSH, VDI versus physical, on-premises versus cloud, persistent versus non-persistent, remoting protocols, Windows app management, and everything else that is still important but that people aren’t talking as much about in 2018.
My fellow VMware EUC Champions will try to answer every question about EUC. Also, let’s see if some of the attendees from Wisconsin will bring their traditional give-away
Is VDI Dead? [WIN3535BUR]
Five years ago, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) was all the rage. But now that everyone’s talking about the digital workspace, intelligence, mobile apps, and identity management, it’s almost like we forgot about little ole VDI! So where is VDI in 2018? Have we already reached peak VDI? Is VDI on the decline, or are its brightest days still to come? In this session, Brian Madden will look at how VDI fits into the end-user computing world in 2018 and where it’s headed. He’ll discuss VDI hot-button issues like persistent versus non-persistent disks, VDI versus RDSH, on-premises versus cloud, remoting protocols, and integration with physical desktops and laptops.
It might not surprise you that I have an opinion about VDI I always enjoy listening to Brian Madden and I’m looking forward to his first VMworld appearance as a VMware employee.

Last year, this was by far my favorite session. Shawn was presenting and showed a lot of demos. You could feel the EUC vibe in the audience and I hope this year the vibe will be the same.
Designing for the Unexpected: Delivering IT on a Boat with VMware Horizon [VIN2650BU]
This session will discuss some of the key requirements of delivering an IT infrastructure on a boat for a maritime expedition. You will find out how using VMware’s end-user computing solution enabled the science team to deliver complex applications that map the archeology of the Black Sea. Find out about the requirements, constraints, and risks, plus the decisions taken to overcome them, making it possible to conduct one of the largest multidisciplinary maritime archaeology projects ever attempted.
There was a lot of buzz around their projects on the black sea. As I have a passion for diving and VDI, I’m really curious about this session. As the requirements on a boat, especially one with such a specific goal as to map the archeology of the Black Sea, are different from any other project, I’m looking forward to Mark and Kat sharing their experiences.
