To be The Year of VDI or not to be The Year of VDI, that’s the question. Well, to be honest, I don’t think it’s even a question. Yes, I do believe that VDI has deserved all of the attention it got through this initiative and everything that came out of it. Today (during the VDI Performance Summit in Amsterdam), Brian Madden delivered the keynote and I believe the initiative got mentioned on 4 or 5 slides. This much attention (next to this blog post he dedicated to explaining why no year ever should be dedicated to VDI) was more than I ever hoped for. Why you would ask? The answer is simple. I believe, like explained in this post, that a VDI is essential in successfully delivering the “Any App, Any Device, Any Cloud” vision to customers. Sure, there are exceptions (like my own employer ITQ and our partner VMware), but they are just a handful in a large landscape of companies moving towards a Digital Workspace. In an ideal world, VDI wouldn’t be necessary or exist even. But in that ideal world, we won’t have to deal with other stuff like hangovers, breakfasts at Denny’s, auto-tune rap artists and penis-enlargement emails either.

Brian Madden presents about VDI and shows the first results of the survey

There are a lot of misconceptions about VDI and to take most of them away, I thought it was a great idea to start a community-driven survey. A survey that shows information about the technology, topics like operating systems, GPUs and usage in general. The first results are based on the survey I sent out in December, but my goal is to create an open platform in which everyone can contribute and all information is up-to-date and freely available. The first results can be found here:
